Gaur Chowk Underpass Nears Opening, Promises Relief for Noida Commuters

The six-lane Gaur Chowk underpass in Greater Noida West has entered its final construction stage, with authorities targeting an opening before Diwali and commuters expected to get a direct route around one of the area’s busiest traffic intersections.

The 700-metre underpass is being built at a cost of Rs 92 crore. The main construction has been completed, while road markings, lighting, wall paintings and other finishing work remain, according to a report by Millennium Post – Delhi.

Once operational, the facility will allow vehicles to bypass the traffic signals and congestion at Gaur Chowk. It is expected to improve connections between Greater Noida West, Noida, Gaur City, Surajpur and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

The underpass has been constructed parallel to the Taj Highway, alongside a 60-metre-wide road. It extends for about 350 metres on either side of the junction and is designed to provide a direct passage for vehicles travelling between Greater Noida, Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

Gaur Chowk serves more than five lakh people living in Greater Noida West and adjoining residential sectors. It also receives traffic from Noida, Surajpur, Crossings Republik and Ghaziabad. During morning and evening peak hours, commuters frequently face long delays while negotiating the intersection.

The project began in July 2024 and was initially scheduled for completion within 18 months. Its execution was affected by restrictions imposed under the Graded Response Action Plan, rainfall and technical difficulties, including the shifting of utility services and the construction of ramps.

The underpass is intended to separate through traffic from vehicles using the intersection, reducing the need for motorists travelling between the connected areas to stop at the junction. Its operational impact will depend on the completion of the remaining finishing work and the opening of the facility to traffic.

The reported target is to open the underpass before Diwali. No specific opening date or details of any traffic diversions during the final works were provided in the report.
