The six-lane underpass at Gaur Chowk in Greater Noida West has entered its final construction stage, with authorities targeting an opening before Diwali to ease prolonged congestion at one of the region’s busiest intersections. The 700-metre facility is being built at a cost of Rs 92 crore and will allow vehicles to bypass the junction’s traffic signals.
The underpass is being constructed parallel to the Taj Highway, alongside a 60-metre-wide road. It extends for about 350 metres on either side of Gaur Chowk and is designed to provide a direct route for vehicles travelling between Greater Noida, Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
The main construction work has been completed, while road markings, lighting, wall paintings and other finishing activities remain. Once operational, the facility is expected to improve connectivity between Greater Noida West, Noida, Gaur City, Surajpur and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway by allowing through traffic to avoid the congested intersection.
The project began in July 2024 and was initially scheduled for completion within 18 months. Its progress was affected by restrictions imposed under the Graded Response Action Plan, rainfall and technical difficulties. The challenges included shifting utility services and constructing the ramps required to connect the underpass with the surrounding road network.
Gaur Chowk serves more than five lakh people living in Greater Noida West and adjoining residential sectors. It also receives traffic from Noida, Surajpur, Crossings Republik and Ghaziabad. During morning and evening peak hours, commuters frequently spend considerable time negotiating the junction, where traffic from residential areas and regional routes converges.
The project’s design separates vehicles travelling through the corridor from traffic movements at the surface intersection. The direct passage is intended to reduce the number of vehicles stopping at the signals and to improve movement towards Greater Noida, Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
The remaining work is limited to finishing and operational preparations, according to the report. Authorities are targeting completion and opening before Diwali, after which commuters will be able to use the underpass as part of the road connection between Greater Noida West and the surrounding regional routes.
