EU-India Joint Venture Sparks Innovation in EV Battery Recycling

Towards sustainability and innovation, the European Union (EU) and India have joined forces to foster start-ups specialising in Electric Vehicle (EV) battery recycling.

Trade and Technology Council

This collaborative effort stems from the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) established in April 2022, aimed at deepening cooperation in clean and green technologies. Under the TTC framework, both regions have issued expressions of interest to identify start-ups dedicated to EV battery recycling. This initiative serves as a matchmaking event, facilitating partnerships between European and Indian start-ups, thereby fostering knowledge exchange and promoting circularity in rare materials.

A total of twelve start-ups, comprising six from each region, will have the opportunity to pitch their innovations during the matchmaking event scheduled for June 2024. Following these presentations, six finalists, three from each region, will be selected to explore market opportunities through visits to India and the EU, respectively. Marc Lemaitre, representing the European Commission, underscores the significance of unlocking innovative possibilities for a green and circular economy. He encourages EU innovators to collaborate with their Indian counterparts, emphasising the potential for mutual growth and advancement. On the Indian front, Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, representing the Government of India, emphasises the commitment to fostering sustainability and innovation for a thriving circular economy. This collaboration aligns with India’s vision of harnessing clean energy technologies to drive economic growth while mitigating environmental impact. The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is April 30, offering start-ups a valuable opportunity to partake in this collaborative initiative. Through the TTC, EU-India bilateral trade aims to scale new heights, leveraging innovation in clean energy technologies to propel sustainable development and economic prosperity. By pooling resources and expertise, the EU and India are poised to revolutionise the EV battery recycling landscape, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
