Electric Vehicle Registrations Hit Record August in India

Electric vehicle registrations in India reached a record 2,98,448 units in August 2026, rising 53 per cent year-on-year and lifting overall EV penetration to 12.3 per cent from 9.5 per cent a year earlier, according to retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Tuesday.

India | September 8, 2026 — All four electric vehicle categories recorded their best-ever August performance, with electric passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles each setting a monthly record. Total EV retail sales stood at 1,95,250 units in August 2025.

Electric two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of the market. Sales rose 67 per cent year-on-year to 1,83,204 units from 1,09,673 units a year earlier. TVS Motor Company led the segment with 48,938 units, followed by Bajaj Auto with 41,114 units. Bajaj’s sales were more than three times its August 2025 figure of 12,246 units.

Ather Energy sold 28,757 electric two-wheelers in August, an increase of about 50 per cent from 19,210 units in the same month last year. Hero MotoCorp recorded sales of 19,007 units, compared with 13,769 units in August 2025.

Electric passenger vehicle sales grew by about 52 per cent year-on-year to 30,696 units from 20,210 units. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles remained the largest seller, with 13,158 units, up 63 per cent from 8,064 units in August 2025. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 6,464 units, a 56 per cent increase over its year-earlier sales of 4,139 units.

JSW MG Motor ranked third despite a 17.77 per cent decline in sales to 4,622 units from 5,621 units in August 2025. VinFast, which entered the Indian market within the past year, secured fourth place with sales of 2,199 units. Maruti Suzuki India recorded 1,412 retail sales of its e Vitara during the month.

Electric three-wheeler sales increased 25.28 per cent year-on-year to 79,846 units from 63,736 units. The electric commercial vehicle segment recorded the sharpest percentage growth, with sales almost tripling to 4,702 units from 1,631 units in August 2025.

Sai Giridhar, president of FADA, said electric commercial vehicles reached an all-time monthly high and represented a 5.18 per cent share of the segment. He said the figures indicated that fleet electrification was moving from pilot projects to purchase orders. Giridhar also said electric two-wheelers accounted for more than 60 per cent of all EV retail sales, while three-wheelers had a 65.3 per cent electric penetration rate and passenger EVs reached a 7.6 per cent share.

The August figures cover retail sales across India and reflect registrations recorded by automobile dealers. The data places electric two-wheelers at the centre of overall EV adoption while also showing stronger growth in commercial vehicles and continued expansion in electric passenger vehicles.
