Eco-Friendly Cement Production BALCO, Shree Cement Join Forces

In an effort towards sustainable industrial practices, Bharat Aluminum Company Limited (BALCO), a key player in India’s aluminum production landscape and a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminum, has inked a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shree Cement Limited.

This strategic partnership marks a pivotal milestone in the pursuit of low-carbon cement production, leveraging BALCO’s expertise in fly ash management and Shree Cement’s prowess in cement manufacturing. The collaboration revolves around the dispatch of 90,000 metric tons of fly ash from BALCO to Shree Cement, setting the stage for a symbiotic relationship aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and circular economy principles within the cement industry. Fly ash, a by-product of thermal power generation, holds immense potential for beneficial reuse across various sectors, with its utilisation in cement manufacturing alone capable of mitigating approximately 500 kg of carbon emissions, conserving 3.2 million GJ of energy, and preserving 250 litres of water per ton. This strategic alliance not only underscores the significance of cross-industry collaboration but also exemplifies a shared commitment towards responsible fly ash management and sustainable industrial practices. Beyond cement production, fly ash finds applications in diverse sectors such as brick manufacturing, road construction, infrastructure projects, and agriculture, contributing to resource conservation and environmental stewardship.

Aligned with its overarching mission to ‘Transform the Planet’, BALCO has been at the forefront of promoting the sustainable utilisation of fly ash across various industries, including brick and cement plants, road construction, infrastructure projects, and mining operations. In the fiscal year 2024 alone, BALCO’s relentless efforts have resulted in the supply of over 4 million metric tons of fly ash, achieving an impressive 141% utilisation rate, indicative of its unwavering commitment to resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. India endeavours to embrace greener and more sustainable industrial practices, the BALCO-Shree Cement partnership stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration, driving the transition towards low-carbon cement production and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future.
