DUSU election results 2026 counting is underway at Delhi University under heavy security, with the NSUI leading the presidential race after four rounds and Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen ahead for vice-president. More than 20 rounds of counting are expected before the results are declared.
NSUI’s Vijay Shankar Meena is leading the presidential contest, followed by ABVP candidate Yash Dabas. The ABVP is ahead for secretary and joint secretary, with NSUI candidates currently in second place for both posts. Shokeen, who entered the vice-presidential contest as an Independent after not receiving an NSUI ticket, is leading that race, followed by the ABVP candidate.
The Left alliance of AISA and SFI is trailing across all posts after four rounds. Counting is taking place with particular attention on the counting centre and other locations where candidates, supporters and students may gather, police said.
The security arrangements come as the election has been shaped by concerns extending beyond student politics. Student housing and women’s safety were prominent issues in candidate manifestoes following the September 6 collapse of a building housing a private hostel at Satya Niketan, a major hub for private student accommodation serving colleges in Delhi University’s South Campus. Five students were killed in the incident.
Delhi Police have imposed traffic restrictions on stretches including Chhatra Marg, Probyn Road and University Road while counting continues. Police teams are coordinating with Delhi University authorities and college administrations to regulate entry and exit, manage crowds and restrict unauthorised movement around the campus.
“Pickets and barricades have been placed at college gates and other strategic points to regulate movement and prevent unauthorised entry,” Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Central range, said. He added that foot patrols, motorcycle units and PCR vans had been deployed across the campus to maintain surveillance and respond to any situation during counting and the declaration of results.
The election recorded a turnout of 40.46% on Friday, higher than the 29.7% recorded in 2024 and 39.45% in 2025. The campaign also reflected the changing methods of student mobilisation, with candidates using Instagram reels, music videos, drone footage and personal video appeals alongside conventional campus campaigning.
At the Campus Law Centre, comprising Law Centre-I and Law Centre-II, voting preferences have historically been influenced by caste and regional identities, according to party insiders cited in the report. Candidates associated with Jat, Gujjar, Yadav and Purvanchal networks featured prominently in the contest. Campaigns also included reported distribution of makeup hampers, chocolates and pizzas to students.
Counting will continue for the remaining rounds, after which Delhi University and the authorities overseeing the process are expected to announce the final results and complete the security arrangements around the campus.
