Delhi Women Special Buses Target Safer Daily Commutes
Delhi is preparing to add a dedicated network of 56 women-only electric bus services across 28 high-demand corridors, targeting the daily journeys of working women and female students. The plan links residential neighbourhoods with employment centres, commercial districts, educational institutions and Metro interchanges, placing safer and more reliable surface transport at the centre of the capital’s mobility challenge.
The proposed network will be divided between two service categories. Thirty Ladies Special services will cover 15 major city routes, while 26 University Ladies Special services will operate across 13 corridors connecting residential areas with Delhi University campuses and other colleges. The university-focused routes are expected to serve areas including Najafgarh, Rohini, Janakpuri, Mundka, Mayur Vihar, Kalkaji, Palla and Dhaula Kuan. The Delhi women special buses are designed around peak commuting periods rather than all-day operations. City services are scheduled to operate in both directions during the morning and evening office rush, with morning trips planned between 7:52 am and 9 am and return services between 4:32 pm and 6:15 pm. University services are expected to follow academic schedules, creating a more direct link between housing and education hubs.
From an urban planning perspective, the initiative addresses a persistent weakness in Delhi’s transport system: the gap between major mass-transit corridors and the neighbourhoods where people actually begin and end their journeys. A senior transport official said route selection was based on corridors with significant movement of women passengers, while urban mobility experts point out that predictable, direct services can influence access to jobs and higher education. The Delhi women special buses will also bring together safety and environmental objectives. The electric fleet is planned to include CCTV cameras, panic buttons connected to an operations control centre and low-floor access features for passengers with disabilities.
Bus marshals or women police personnel may be deployed on designated services. Women eligible for free bus travel will be able to use Pink Smart Cards. The larger test will be implementation. Dedicated services can improve confidence in public transport, but their impact will depend on dependable schedules, adequate frequency, well-lit stops and seamless connections with the wider bus and Metro network. Electrification also needs reliable charging and maintenance systems to deliver its full climate benefit. If implemented effectively, the network could make public transport more accessible for women while strengthening Delhi’s shift towards cleaner urban mobility. The next measure of success will be whether the services reduce the practical barriers that still shape where women can study, work and travel across the city.
