Delhi will impose traffic restrictions across more than 35 roads from September 11 to 13 as the city hosts the BRICS Summit, with 72 diversions planned and traffic movement subject to change during VIP movements, according to a Times of India report published on September 9.
The restrictions are expected to affect major routes including Mathura Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Shanti Path, Kartavya Path, C-Hexagon, Teen Murti Marg, Satya Marg, Sardar Patel Marg, Africa Avenue, Safdarjung Road, APJ Abdul Kalam Road and roads around Connaught Place and central Delhi. Rehearsals for the summit have already caused restrictions on several stretches.
Schools and government offices will remain closed during the summit period. Commuters have been advised to check their routes before leaving, avoid controlled roads and follow traffic police signs at diversion points. The report lists 22 diversion locations, including Janpath, Patel Chowk, Kartavya Path, Moti Bagh, Lodhi Road, Neela Gumbad, Oberoi Flyover, Bhairon Road and Mandi House.
Movement around Connaught Place and Janpath will be particularly restricted. Traffic will not be allowed towards C-Hexagon or from Connaught Place’s Outer Circle in specified directions. Vehicles travelling from Connaught Place towards Sardar Patel Marg have been advised to use Ring Road or Vande Mataram Marg and NH-48.
Passengers travelling to the airport have been advised to use the Metro where possible. Alternative road routes listed in the report include NH-48 through Mahipalpur and the Airport-Dwarka Road, the Urban Extension Road-II route, and routes through Ring Road, AIIMS, Moti Bagh and RTR Marg for travellers from South Delhi. Commuters from West Delhi have been directed towards routes through Punjabi Bagh, Ring Road, Raja Garden, Pankha Road, Dabri and Dwarka.
Railway passengers will also need to account for diversions. Suggested approaches to New Delhi Railway Station include routes through Boulevard Road, Rani Jhansi Marg, DB Gupta Road and Paharganj Road. Routes to Old Delhi Railway Station include the Ring Road, Hanuman Mandir and SP Mukherjee Marg, while passengers heading to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station have been advised to use AIIMS, Ring Road, Ashram Chowk and Mathura Road.
Metro services are expected to continue, while bus routes may be diverted during VIP movements. Autos and taxis will remain available, but roadside parking will not be permitted within 200 metres of controlled roads. Delhi Traffic Police updates should be checked before travel, particularly for short-notice changes to restrictions and diversions.
