Tamil Nadu’s Thaimaaman Thanga Modhiram gold ring scheme for eligible newborns has been postponed, health minister KG Arunraj said on Wednesday, with the government yet to announce a revised launch date.
The scheme, originally scheduled to be launched on September 15, will provide a one-gram gold ring to eligible babies delivered at government hospitals. It will cover newborns delivered from June 22, 2026, according to details reported by Times of India – Chennai.
Arunraj attributed the postponement to Chief Minister Vijay’s foreign travel. Asked whether the programme would instead be launched on September 25, the minister said the government would officially announce the date soon. He added that the launch was likely to take place at Usilampatti in Madurai.
The scheme is being presented by the TVK government as a flagship initiative connected to births at state-run hospitals. The eligibility condition described by the minister links the benefit to newborns delivered at government hospitals, although the report does not provide further details on the application process, documentation requirements or the mechanism through which families will receive the rings.
The minister also addressed the quality standards for the gold rings. He said the government would ensure that the rings meet the required quality and that only 916-hallmarked gold would be accepted after testing. The reference to hallmarking indicates that the gold will be tested before the rings are distributed, but the report does not specify which agency will conduct the testing or how the process will be monitored across participating hospitals.
The postponement leaves the original September 15 launch schedule superseded. Families whose children were born in government hospitals from June 22 will have to wait for the official announcement on the revised date and the government’s instructions on eligibility verification and distribution.
The programme’s implementation details, including the final venue, launch date, hospital-level arrangements and distribution schedule, remain pending. The health minister said the government would announce the date officially.
