The Tamil Nadu government has postponed the launch of its Thaimaaman Thanga Modhiram gold ring scheme for newborns, Health Minister KG Arunraj said on Wednesday, citing Chief Minister Vijay’s foreign travel. The government will announce a revised launch date officially, the minister said.
The scheme was originally scheduled to begin on September 15. Arunraj said it is likely to be launched at Usilampatti in Madurai, while declining to confirm whether September 25 would be the new date.
Under the scheme, eligible newborns delivered at government hospitals will receive a one-gram gold ring. The benefit will cover babies born from June 22, 2026, according to the details reported by Times of India – Chennai.
The announcement places the launch schedule, rather than the eligibility framework, under revision. Families whose children meet the stated criteria will have to wait for the government’s formal notification confirming the date and launch arrangements.
The minister also said the government would ensure the quality of the rings distributed under the programme. Only 916-hallmarked gold will be accepted after testing, he said.
The scheme is among the flagship initiatives of the TVK government and is linked to deliveries at state-run hospitals. Its implementation will require the government to identify eligible births, arrange procurement and testing of the gold, and coordinate distribution through the public-health system. No revised date or further operational details had been officially announced at the time of the minister’s statement.
The government is expected to issue a formal announcement on the new launch date. Until then, the original September 15 schedule does not apply.
