Electoral entries of prominent voters in Delhi’s New Delhi assembly constituency, including former vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar, BJP veteran L K Advani, external affairs minister S Jaishankar and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, have been verified and cleared for inclusion in the final electoral rolls after district poll officials reviewed their details and supporting documents.
The voters had received notices during the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The notices were issued after officials identified the entries either as having logical discrepancies or as being unmapped in the last SIR exercise, according to an election official quoted by the Times of India.
“Based on the details provided in the enumeration forms, the entries for these voters were identified either in the list of logical discrepancies or as unmapped in the last SIR,” the official said. “Consequently, according to the standard operating procedures of Election Commission of India, notices were issued to the electors as part of the verification process.”
The official said the cases were examined individually. In most cases, election officials contacted the voters, collected the required information and documents, and completed the verification process.
The list of prominent voters who received notices also includes former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, former NITI Aayog vice-chairperson Arvind Panagariya, BJP MLA Kailash Gahlot, former army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, CBI director Praveen Sood and former Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung.
The notices to these high-profile voters attracted attention because they highlighted how the roll-revision process was being applied to entries associated with senior political figures, public officials and professionals. Election officials have maintained that the notices form part of the standard verification procedure and do not by themselves mean that a voter’s name will be deleted.
Across Delhi, around 33 lakh voters have been identified for service of SIR notices across the capital’s 70 assembly constituencies. The notices are issued by election officials and physically delivered by booth-level officers. Their dispatch began on August 31, and officials said most voters had received them.
Voters can submit responses online or offline by visiting the assistant electoral registration officers whose details and visiting hours are listed in the notices. The process allows electors to provide the required information and documents before officials decide whether an entry should remain on the rolls.
The Delhi poll panel must complete disposal of all notices by October 29. The final SIR electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on November 4, marking the next formal milestone in the revision exercise.
