NEW DELHI | September 9, 2026 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to inspect paying guest accommodations across the capital and take action against illegal structures, days after the collapse of a PG building in Satya Niketan killed seven people.
Gupta instructed municipal officials to conduct intensive inspections of PG hostels, examine building records and identify unauthorised construction, according to the report. She also directed officials to establish when illegal construction took place and determine which authority had jurisdiction over the work.
The MCD has been asked to carry out inspections and demolition drives in several parts of Delhi. Senior municipal officials have been instructed to remain on the ground while the action is conducted, with the focus on structures suspected of violating construction rules.
The directive follows the collapse of a building known as ‘Hostel Daze’ in Satya Niketan. The structure, which housed students and other residents, collapsed at about 1pm on Sunday. Police received information about the incident at 1.34pm.
According to the first information report cited in the report, a local inquiry found that the building was more than 30 years old. The structure had a ground floor and four upper floors, and additional floors had allegedly been constructed to generate rental income.
The collapse has drawn attention to the safety of student accommodation and other rental properties operating in densely occupied parts of the capital. The chief minister’s instructions require officials to review building records alongside physical inspections, including the status of construction and the jurisdiction responsible for enforcement.
The MCD’s proposed action is expected to cover illegal structures identified during the inspections.
