Delhi and the wider National Capital Region are heading into another phase of volatile summer weather, with meteorological agencies forecasting a sharp rise in temperatures before strong winds, rain and possible hailstorms return later this week.
The fluctuating conditions are expected to place additional pressure on public infrastructure, transport systems and government schools already struggling with heat-related disruptions. After nearly two weeks of relatively moderated conditions, daytime temperatures across Delhi have again crossed the 42-degree Celsius mark. Weather officials expect parts of the city to touch 44 degrees over the next two days, while warm nights are likely to intensify discomfort for residents in densely populated neighbourhoods with limited green cover and poor ventilation. The anticipated weather reversal is linked to a fresh western disturbance expected to influence north-western India from midweek. Forecast models indicate dust storms and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh. Light rain and isolated hail activity may follow, bringing temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave. Urban planners and climate specialists say the recurring cycle of extreme heat followed by sudden storm activity reflects a growing pattern of climate instability affecting Indian cities.
In Delhi, where built-up surfaces continue to expand faster than ecological buffers, rapid temperature spikes are increasingly amplifying the urban heat island effect. Areas with limited tree cover and high concrete density are witnessing sharper thermal stress during both daytime and nighttime hours. Government schools are among the public institutions most vulnerable to these shifts. Teachers and administrators in several districts have reportedly been advised to remain alert to heat-related illnesses, especially during afternoon hours when classrooms and playgrounds experience peak thermal exposure. Education experts note that prolonged heat conditions can affect attendance, concentration levels and overall learning outcomes, particularly for children commuting long distances. Meteorological data from early April also indicates that intermittent rainfall episodes earlier in the season temporarily prevented temperatures from escalating rapidly. The city recorded multiple rainy days during the first week of April, delaying the arrival of extreme summer conditions.
However, temperatures began climbing steadily by mid-April and have remained largely above seasonal averages since late May. The Ridge area in central Delhi emerged among the hottest locations this week, underlining the uneven distribution of heat across the capital. Weather analysts say this variation demonstrates how land use patterns, vegetation loss and localised construction activity continue to influence microclimates within the city. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is advancing further across peninsular India, covering additional parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Conditions are becoming favourable for its progression towards eastern and central India over the coming days. While southern and north-eastern states are likely to receive heavy rainfall, northern urban centres may continue facing alternating spells of heat stress and storm activity before the monsoon reaches the region.
