Delhi Metro Pink Line Shows Crowd Levels in Every Coach

Delhi Metro Pink Line passengers can now see the estimated crowd level in each of a train’s six coaches on platform display screens before boarding, giving commuters a way to choose less crowded coaches during busy periods. The facility has been introduced by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) after being used on the Magenta Line since 2022.

The coach occupancy information will appear on passenger information display screens shortly before a train arrives at the platform. Each coach will be identified as C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6, with an estimated crowd percentage shown against the current passenger load. This allows passengers to assess the relative occupancy of different coaches before deciding where to stand on the platform.

The facility is now available on the Pink Line, which runs between Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar. The corridor serves several parts of the Delhi metropolitan area and is used by passengers making cross-city journeys as well as those connecting to other Metro corridors. The occupancy display is expected to be particularly useful during the morning and evening peak periods, when passengers often board the first available coach despite uneven crowding across a train.

According to the report citing DMRC, the system estimates occupancy using load sensors installed in each coach. The current weight of a coach is calculated and compared with the weight of an empty coach to estimate the proportion attributable to passengers. The resulting figure is then presented on the platform display before the train reaches the station.

The system does not provide a headcount of passengers. Instead, it gives an approximate occupancy percentage based on the measured load of each coach. This distinction is important because the information is intended to help passengers compare crowding levels rather than provide an exact count of people inside a train.

DMRC first made the feature available on platforms serving the Magenta Line, which runs between Botanical Garden and Janakpuri West, in 2022. The report said the facility received a positive response from passengers, after which it was extended to the Pink Line. The expansion indicates that the system is being used as a passenger-information tool alongside conventional train arrival and service updates.

For commuters, the feature shifts part of the boarding decision from guesswork to information available at platform level. Passengers may be able to move towards a relatively less crowded coach before the train arrives, although the usefulness of the display will depend on how closely the estimated occupancy reflects conditions when the train reaches the platform. The supplied report does not specify whether the facility will be extended to additional Delhi Metro corridors or provide a timeline for further expansion.
