Delhi Metro Mobile Network Quality Faces Fresh Scrutiny

A fresh audit of mobile connectivity across Delhi-NCR’s metro and rapid transit system has revealed major disparities in service quality, highlighting the growing dependence of urban mobility on reliable digital infrastructure.

Conducted across nearly 490 kilometres of rail corridors, the assessment underlines how mobile network quality is increasingly tied to commuter productivity, digital payments, and public safety. The exercise, carried out by India’s telecom regulator earlier this year, tested live voice and data sessions across multiple technologies including legacy and next-generation networks. The findings point to uneven user experiences in one of India’s busiest transit ecosystems, where millions now rely on uninterrupted connectivity during travel for work, banking, navigation and emergency communication. Among private telecom operators, network performance varied sharply. Fifth-generation services delivered the fastest data throughput, but the gap between operators remained substantial. Industry analysts say this reflects broader infrastructure asymmetry in high-density urban environments, where underground tunnels, elevated corridors and dense built-up areas continue to challenge seamless signal delivery.

The data also showed significant coverage blind spots, particularly in sections where signal penetration remains weak. Public-sector networks were found to face the highest number of low-signal instances, raising questions around infrastructure modernisation and investment readiness. Urban planners note that in transit-heavy cities like Delhi, digital access is no longer a luxury but a core public utility. For commuters, poor mobile network quality often translates into failed UPI transactions, interrupted remote work calls and limited access to app-based transport services. In a city where multimodal travel is rapidly becoming the norm, these disruptions can affect both economic efficiency and commuter confidence.

Transport specialists say metro systems globally are integrating telecom infrastructure as part of essential urban design, much like ventilation, security and energy systems. In India’s context, this becomes critical as cities move towards smart mobility, lower private vehicle dependence and more sustainable public transport use. Delhi Metro had expanded its in-station telecom infrastructure during its 5G rollout, including tunnel-based signal systems and micro-cell installations along difficult corridors. However, experts argue that infrastructure upgrades must remain continuous as passenger loads and digital consumption grow. The latest audit signals a wider challenge for Indian cities: as transport networks become greener and more digitised, the resilience of supporting communication systems will shape commuter experience. For Delhi-NCR, improving mobile network quality may now be as vital as expanding rail lines themselves.
