Delhi Hydrogen Train Trial Could Reshape Regional Mobility
Delhi could soon become the next testing ground for India’s first hydrogen-powered train, as railway authorities prepare to move the service from its current Sonipat operations for trials on the capital’s network. The proposed testing run towards Subzi Mandi, with a possible extension to New Delhi station, could offer an early indication of how low-emission rail technology performs on one of the country’s busiest urban transport corridors.
The hydrogen train has been operating on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Before it can enter Delhi for testing, however, railway officials must temporarily withdraw it from its scheduled service for several days. The operational adjustment has emerged as one of the main reasons for the delay in beginning the proposed Delhi trials. The planned test is expected to examine more than the train’s ability to travel between Sonipat and the capital. Engineers will also assess how the train performs under conditions designed to replicate a heavily occupied service. Sandbags are expected to be loaded into the coaches to recreate the weight of roughly 2,600 passengers. This type of testing is intended to measure the impact of a full passenger load on acceleration, braking, track performance and overall operational stability. The train consists of 10 coaches, including eight passenger coaches, with the simulated weight distributed according to the capacity of individual coaches.
For Delhi-NCR, the significance extends beyond the technology itself. The region’s transport system is under growing pressure from rising commuter volumes, road congestion and the environmental cost of fossil-fuel-dependent mobility. A hydrogen train, if proven reliable at scale, could add another option to the region’s transition towards cleaner public transport. The proposed corridor is also important because it connects a major NCR commuter belt with Delhi’s dense urban rail network. A successful trial could provide operational data for future deployments, although questions around fuel availability, infrastructure, maintenance costs and the wider production of low-carbon hydrogen will remain critical to long-term viability.
Urban transport experts say the technology should ultimately be assessed not only on its emissions profile but also on reliability, affordability and its ability to integrate with existing public transport systems. Cleaner trains will have the greatest civic value when they improve everyday mobility without creating new access or cost barriers. The next stage is expected to be the Sonipat-Subzi Mandi trial, followed by possible testing up to New Delhi station. For the capital region, the exercise could mark an early step towards evaluating whether emerging zero-emission rail technologies can support a more resilient and lower-carbon transport network.
