Delhi Government Partners with ADB to Enhance Water Supply

The Delhi government has announced a significant partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to revitalise the Wazirabad Water Supply Improvement Project.

This collaboration aims to modernise the city’s water infrastructure, ensuring a 24×7 supply and reducing non-revenue water (NRW) losses. The Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant (WTP), a critical component of Delhi’s water supply network, serves areas including Burari, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, Model Town, Punjabi Bagh, Shakur Basti, Jahangirpuri, Peera Garhi, Avantika, and Pitampura. The project, initially part of the Delhi Water Supply Master Plan-2021, was conceptualised in 2011 but faced delays due to political decisions. The previous administration’s reluctance to engage with international financial institutions like ADB led to the withdrawal of support in 2020, hindering progress.

The renewed agreement with ADB marks a pivotal shift towards addressing Delhi’s water challenges. The project focuses on upgrading outdated pipelines, introducing advanced water treatment technologies, and enhancing service delivery for citizens. Key objectives include ensuring round-the-clock water supply in areas under the Wazirabad WTP command and reducing NRW by enhancing leak detection, pipeline rehabilitation, and pressure management.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been actively working to improve water supply across the city. Initiatives such as the installation of flow meters on underground reservoirs, expansion of water ATM projects, and the establishment of reverse osmosis (RO) plants in water-scarce areas are part of the government’s comprehensive strategy. Additionally, efforts to rejuvenate lakes and implement rainwater harvesting are underway to augment groundwater levels and ensure sustainable water supply.

The collaboration with ADB is expected to bring in technical expertise, international best practices, and structured financial support, ensuring the success of the Wazirabad water supply improvement project. This partnership aligns with the government’s commitment to providing equitable, sustainable, and efficient water services to all residents, contributing to the broader goal of creating zero net carbon, eco-friendly, sustainable, gender-neutral, and equitable urban environments.

As the project progresses, stakeholders remain hopeful that the renewed focus and international collaboration will lead to significant improvements in Delhi’s water supply infrastructure, benefiting millions of residents and setting a precedent for future urban development projects.
