The Delhi government has announced the replacement of all diesel and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles operated by the Forest Department with electric vehicles (EVs) within the next 60 days.
This directive, issued by Minister of Environment Manjinder Singh Sirsa, aims to reduce pollution in forest areas and protect the city’s wildlife. The decision underscores the urgent need to minimize emissions in Delhi’s forest reserves, which are crucial habitats for various species. Minister Sirsa emphasized that the transition to EVs will not only curb pollution but also contribute to a quieter and cleaner environment in these sensitive zones.
To facilitate this transition, the Forest Department has been instructed to conduct a detailed vehicle study and submit a comprehensive transition plan within seven days. This plan will outline the logistics, infrastructure requirements, and timelines for replacing the existing fleet with electric alternatives. Furthermore, the government has implemented an immediate ban on the entry of all non-essential, non-electric vehicles—both government and private—into Delhi’s forest and protected areas. This measure aims to further reduce vehicular emissions and disturbances in these ecologically sensitive regions.
Minister Sirsa remarked, “Delhi’s forests deserve quiet, clean mobility, not smoke and noise.” This statement reflects the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where nature and urban development coexist harmoniously. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Delhi Government to combat pollution and enhance green infrastructure. A substantial budget allocation of Rs 506 crore has been made to strengthen environmental monitoring, implement pollution control projects, and protect biodiversity. Additionally, a massive greening initiative to plant around 70 lakh saplings across the city is underway, aimed at increasing Delhi’s green cover, improving air quality, and promoting urban biodiversity.
