Delhi’s BRICS Summit arrangements are reshaping weekend travel and public activities, with road restrictions, diversions and regulated movement expected across parts of central Delhi. Cultural venues, event organisers, fitness groups and heritage-walk operators have altered or postponed plans as residents prepare for possible difficulty moving through the city.
The disruption is particularly visible around central Delhi, where galleries, cultural institutions, restaurants, event venues, parks and heritage sites are popular weekend destinations. The Times of India reported that some events have been postponed, while several institutions have announced closures during the weekend.
The Bazaar at Sunder Nursery will remain closed on Sunday. Rohan Aggarwal, the event’s coordinator, said the decision followed concerns about vendors and visitors reaching the venue and moving through the city amid arrangements linked to the summit. “Since it involves vendors bringing in their products from various far-off locations and visitors travelling in, any restrictions or movement-related disruptions can make logistics quite challenging,” he said, adding that the closure was intended to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
A heritage walk planned for the weekend has also been rerouted. Heritage walk leader Nitika Arora is organising a Metro Morphosis walk that will take participants between metro stations before concluding at a station outside central Delhi. She said people looking to visit heritage sites could consider destinations such as Tughlaqabad Fort, Shalimar Bagh and Adilabad Fort, using the Metro for travel.
The opening reception for artist Kanchan Chander’s 50-year retrospective at Bikaner House, originally planned for Saturday, has been postponed to Monday. Chander said traffic restrictions could have reduced attendance and affected the public’s opportunity to view works spanning five decades. “There was no point having an opening reception if there’s traffic restrictions and just a handful turn up,” she said.
Fitness groups that usually meet at Kartavya Path and Shanti Path have also shifted locations. Harshit Seth, an entrepreneur from Rajouri Garden, said he moved his daily runs to the Delhi Cantonment area after seeing the restrictions around Shanti Path and Nehru Park. He said runners could face uncertainty because of possible restrictions during VVIP movement and the usual Sunday footfall along the Shanti Path-Nehru Park stretch.
Visitors planning trips through central Delhi have been advised, through the arrangements reported by the newspaper, to account for diversions and regulated movement. Bharat Mandapam is located within a wider belt that includes heritage, cultural and shopping destinations such as Purana Qila, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, Kartavya Path, the National War Memorial, Delhi Zoo and Sunder Nursery. The area also includes the National Crafts Museum, National Science Centre, National Gallery of Modern Art, IGNCA and the National School of Drama.
Other affected or potentially affected weekend destinations include the Mandi House theatre circuit, Triveni Kala Sangam, Kamani Auditorium, Shriram Centre for Performing Arts, Art Heritage, Janpath Market, Connaught Place, Palika Bazaar and Khan Market. The report noted that not every destination has been closed, but visitors may encounter traffic restrictions and diversions while travelling.
Lalit Kala Akademi and the National Museum have announced weekend closures on Instagram, while the National Gallery of Modern Art will remain closed on Friday. Organisers and visitors are therefore revising schedules around the summit-related restrictions and the specific operating status of each venue.
