India’s largest airline, finds itself at a pivotal juncture regarding its operational collaborations, with Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers confirming that the decision to renew aircraft leases from Turkish Airlines now rests with the Indian government.
This development unfolds amidst robust financial performance by IndiGo, which recently reported its highest-ever fourth-quarter profit, underscoring the complexities airlines navigate when commercial strategies intersect with broader geopolitical considerations and regulatory oversight. IndiGo currently operates direct services to Istanbul utilising two Boeing 777 aircraft, obtained through a lease arrangement with Turkish Airlines. Beyond these direct flights, the partnership extends to codeshare agreements, facilitating seamless connections for Indian travellers to numerous destinations across Europe and the United States. This strategic alliance has been instrumental in expanding IndiGo’s international footprint, serving thousands of Indian customers primarily booking onward journeys beyond Istanbul, thereby enhancing global connectivity vital for economic exchange and cultural understanding that underpins sustainable urban development.
The lease agreements for these Boeing 777 aircraft are slated to expire on May 31. Mr Elbers, during a media interaction following the airline’s fourth-quarter and full-year financial results for 2024-25, emphasised that IndiGo remains fully compliant with all regulatory frameworks governing its operations under the existing Air Service Agreement (ASA) between India and Turkey. His remarks arrive just days after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) revoked the security clearance for Turkish company Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd on May 15, citing national security concerns. This revocation points to mounting diplomatic and military tensions between India and Turkey, largely attributed to Turkey’s perceived strengthening ties with Pakistan, forming the political backdrop against which IndiGo’s operational continuity with its Turkish partner is being evaluated.
Despite these geopolitical complexities, IndiGo has demonstrated exceptional fiscal resilience. The airline announced a record profit after tax of ₹3,067.5 crore for the January-March quarter, marking a substantial 62 per cent surge from the ₹1,894.8 crore recorded in the corresponding period last year. For the full financial year ended March 2025, IndiGo reported a healthy net profit of ₹72,584 million. Excluding foreign exchange impacts, the airline’s net profit reached ₹88,676 million, indicating a consistent strong performance driven by robust demand for air travel and effective execution of its strategic initiatives. Such financial health is crucial for airlines to invest in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, contributing to lower carbon emissions per passenger kilometre and supporting eco-friendly travel practices.
Further underlining its strategic growth trajectory, IndiGo also unveiled plans to launch direct long-haul international flights from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam commencing July. This marks the airline’s significant foray into long-haul international operations, a strategic pivot that diversifies its global presence and reduces reliance on singular partnerships for extended international connectivity. This expansion into direct long-haul routes aligns with the broader aim of enhancing global connectivity, which facilitates trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, ultimately contributing to more dynamic and equitable urban centres.
