NAGARAHOLE: In a tragic incident, Ashwathama, a 38-year-old Dasara elephant, died at the Bheemanakatte Elephant Camp in the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve on Tuesday. Initial reports suggest that the elephant was electrocuted after coming into contact with a solar fence at the camp located in the Ane Chowkur range.
According to a press release issued by the director of the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, the elephant was securely tied to its designated spot by the camp staff on Monday evening. However, the following morning, when the staff checked on Ashwathama at around 5:30 a.m., they found the animal lying lifeless on the ground. Upon realising the elephant was dead, the staff immediately notified senior officials, who promptly arrived at the scene.
The Bheemanakatte Elephant Camp, known for its solar fencing designed to deter wild elephants and protect the camp staff, is now under scrutiny. The exact cause of Ashwathama’s death will be determined after a post-mortem examination, the results of which are awaited. Director Harashakumar Chikkanaragunda stated that the definitive cause of death would be established following the post-mortem report.
Ashwathama had been an integral part of the Dasara elephant squad since its capture in Sakleshpur in 2017. The elephant’s duties included participating in the renowned Dasara celebrations and assisting in various operations such as the capture of wild elephants and combing activities.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre expressed his condolences over Ashwathama’s untimely demise and has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Despite initial reports indicating suspected electrocution by the solar fence, the Minister has called for a comprehensive report following the inquiry.
The death of Ashwathama highlights the potential hazards associated with wildlife conservation measures, such as the use of solar fences.
