The Daimler Truck Innovation Center India (DTICI), which recently celebrated its third anniversary, has emerged as the largest R&D hub for Daimler outside Germany. This center, based in Bengaluru, is playing a pivotal role in advancing the company’s global strategy by driving innovation in commercial vehicle technology, with a particular focus on leveraging AI to enhance truck safety and connectivity.
The center’s work is especially relevant in India, where road accidents are a growing concern. Trucks, being among the top vehicles involved in accidents, contribute significantly to road safety issues, with driver fatigue being one of the major causes. Recognizing this, the DTICI is focusing its efforts on developing solutions that can help combat these challenges. The introduction of AI-driven technologies to monitor and address driver fatigue is one of the key areas of innovation. According to Raghavendra Vaidya, MD & CEO of DTICI, India is not just a hub for implementing technology but is now taking a leadership role in developing and driving global innovation for Daimler. DTICI’s work includes enhancing telematics infrastructure within trucks, enabling real-time data collection and transmission to the cloud. This data can be used to develop various applications that improve vehicle performance, safety, and overall efficiency. Vaidya notes that while the company is still in the early stages of fully understanding how to generate business value from connected trucks, commercial vehicles have a clear business case for such innovations. Furthermore, the center is part of Daimler’s broader strategy to decarbonize the transport sector. By integrating software and electronics into their vehicles, Daimler aims to make trucks not only smarter and safer but also more environmentally friendly.
