Bengaluru Mangaladevi Road Divider Faces Local Opposition
A proposed road divider on Mangaladevi Temple Road in Bengaluru has drawn opposition from residents and a local elected representative, who argue that the planned change could make access more difficult and disrupt movement along a neighbourhood street. The dispute highlights a recurring challenge in Bengaluru: traffic engineering measures can improve vehicle management in one location while creating problems for pedestrians, residents and smaller streets nearby.
Residents have raised concerns over the proposed median and its impact on access to homes and surrounding properties. The road serves a local community rather than functioning solely as a through-route, making the design of turning movements and access points particularly important. Road medians are commonly introduced to organise traffic, restrict unsafe turns and reduce conflicting vehicle movements. But their effectiveness depends on the characteristics of the road. A design that works on a high-volume arterial may not be appropriate for a narrower residential corridor where people need frequent access to side streets, homes, shops and community facilities. The Mangaladevi Temple Road issue also raises questions about how neighbourhood-level infrastructure decisions are made. Residents say they were concerned about the implications of the proposed divider, suggesting that consultation and on-ground assessment should form part of the process before permanent changes are introduced. From a mobility perspective, the focus should extend beyond vehicle throughput.
Streets in established neighbourhoods are used by pedestrians, two-wheelers, cars, delivery workers, public transport users and emergency vehicles. Any alteration to the road layout needs to account for these different users, particularly people who may have limited mobility or rely on direct walking access. There is also a potential traffic-displacement effect. Restricting turns at one point can push vehicles towards adjoining roads, increasing congestion or creating new conflict points. Without a wider traffic assessment, a local intervention may simply shift the problem rather than resolve it. Urban transport experts increasingly favour street designs based on road function rather than applying identical solutions across different locations. Measures such as appropriately placed pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, junction redesign and managed turning points can sometimes address safety concerns without creating excessive barriers to local access. For Bengaluru, the disagreement offers a broader lesson as the city continues to modify its road network. Infrastructure changes need to balance traffic efficiency with accessibility and neighbourhood liveability. This is particularly important in older urban areas, where road layouts evolved around established communities rather than modern traffic volumes.
The immediate priority is therefore a site-specific assessment before the divider becomes permanent. Transparent consultation, pedestrian and traffic-flow analysis, and consideration of emergency access could help determine whether the proposed design delivers a genuine safety improvement without imposing avoidable costs on residents.
