With passenger traffic steadily increasing and infrastructure limitations becoming more visible, voices from the real estate and business ecosystem have argued that the metropolitan region requires additional aviation infrastructure to sustain industrial growth, exports and international connectivity. The issue has once again brought the Parandur airport project into focus. According to industry representatives, Chennai’s existing airport, despite ongoing upgrades aimed at raising handling capacity to around 35 million passengers annually, could begin experiencing severe congestion within the next decade.
