Coimbatore is preparing the next stage of its elevated road network, with the State Highways Department set to initiate the preparation of a detailed project report for extending the existing elevated corridor on Avinashi Road towards Neelambur. The proposed move aims to address mounting congestion on one of western Tamil Nadu’s busiest gateways while improving regional connectivity for commuters and freight traffic entering the city.
Officials familiar with the development indicated that consultants would soon be engaged to prepare the report, estimated to cost around ₹80 lakh. The exercise follows clearances received from aviation and metro rail authorities, enabling planners to examine the feasibility of taking the elevated structure beyond Chinniyampalayam. The proposed Avinashi Road flyover extension is expected to determine critical parameters including project costs, alignment options, land requirements and the design of entry and exit ramps. Detailed geotechnical investigations will also be undertaken to assess the soil conditions required for the construction of additional pillars along the route.
Urban planners say the corridor has emerged as a major pressure point as traffic volumes have increased steadily over the past decade. Chinniyampalayam and surrounding stretches witness long queues during peak periods, affecting daily commuters and slowing the movement of commercial vehicles travelling between Coimbatore and industrial centres such as Tiruppur, Erode and Salem.Transport experts note that extending the elevated corridor could help distribute traffic more efficiently and reduce travel delays, though they emphasise that infrastructure expansion must be accompanied by investments in public transport and non-motorised mobility to ensure sustainable urban growth. Better traffic flow can also contribute to lower vehicle idling times and reduced emissions, supporting broader efforts to improve air quality in rapidly expanding cities. The proposed extension would effectively continue the infrastructure created under the nearly 10-kilometre elevated corridor that transformed mobility along Avinashi Road. The earlier phase, completed at an investment of about ₹1,791 crore, significantly altered commuting patterns and strengthened links between the city and its eastern suburbs.
Industry observers believe the Avinashi Road flyover extension could influence future real estate and commercial activity around Neelambur and adjoining growth corridors. Improved accessibility often encourages investments in housing, logistics and service sectors, creating new economic opportunities while increasing pressure on urban planning authorities to manage development responsibly. With feasibility studies now expected to begin, the findings of the detailed report will determine the scale and viability of the project. Stakeholders say balancing mobility needs with land use, environmental considerations and long-term transport integration will be essential as Coimbatore continues its transition into a larger metropolitan economy.
