Cochin Airport Introduces Rs 200 Crore AI-Powered Security System

Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has embarked on a transformative journey with the launch of its ₹200 crore ‘CIAL 2.0’ project, aiming to digitise operations and enhance passenger security.

The initiative, inaugurated recently, marks a significant step towards modernising the airport’s infrastructure. The project focuses on integrating artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced cybersecurity measures to streamline operations and improve the overall travel experience. Key features of the CIAL 2.0 project include the installation of over 4,000 AI-enabled surveillance cameras across critical areas of the airport. These smart cameras are designed to monitor real-time activities, detect potential threats, and ensure swift responses to emergencies, thereby bolstering the airport’s security framework.

Additionally, the introduction of contactless full-body scanners aims to expedite passenger screening processes while maintaining high safety standards. The Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) has also been implemented to automate the movement of trays during baggage screening, reducing manual handling and increasing efficiency. A notable component of the CIAL 2.0 project is the establishment of a Cyber Defence Operations Centre (CDOC) within the airport premises. Developed in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the CDOC will provide real-time threat intelligence and 24/7 monitoring to safeguard the airport’s digital infrastructure against cyber threats.

The project also aligns with CIAL’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. The airport continues to serve as a model for integrating development with community welfare, showcasing how profits can be channelled for societal benefit. As passenger traffic continues to rise, with projections suggesting India may witness up to one billion air travellers annually by 2040, initiatives like CIAL 2.0 are crucial in preparing airports to handle increased demand efficiently and securely.

In conclusion, the CIAL 2.0 project represents a significant leap towards modernising Cochin International Airport, positioning it as a leader in smart, secure, and sustainable airport operations.
