Childhood Cancer Survivors Share Empowering Journeys on International Childhood Cancer Day
On February 12, 2025, a heartwarming event took place at Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel East, Mumbai, as over 100 childhood cancer survivors, alongside their families, gathered to share their journeys of resilience and recovery. This event, titled ‘Inspiring Actions’, was organised by the Improving Paediatric Cancer Care and Treatment (ImPaCCT) Foundation, which is the paediatric cancer initiative of Tata Memorial Hospital. The gathering, which coincided with International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD), provided a platform for young cancer survivors to inspire and empower one another, showing that there is hope after cancer treatment.
The event was filled with emotional moments as survivors spoke candidly about their battles with cancer and how they rebuilt their lives after facing one of the most challenging experiences a child can endure. Their stories of strength, determination, and the support they received from their families and the ImPaCCT Foundation were a powerful reminder of the importance of hope and perseverance.
Among the inspiring individuals was 22-year-old Ankit Dubey, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a rare cancer that affects the lymph nodes, when he was just seven years old. Ankit faced a gruelling journey that included three relapses, during which he had to take a break from school for a year. However, with the guidance and support of the ImPaCCT Foundation’s scholarship programme, he continued his education and pursued a degree in computer engineering. Today, Ankit is not only a cancer survivor but also a successful digital developer, having secured a placement at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). His story serves as a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define the future, and that resilience can lead to a successful career despite facing adversity. Another remarkable survivor is 18-year-old Devanshi Ravat, who triumphed over Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer that affects soft tissues, when she was just seven years old. Devanshi’s journey was one of both physical and emotional battles, but her determination did not waver. Not only did she overcome cancer, but she went on to achieve national recognition as a rifle shooting champion. Devanshi’s story is one of incredible perseverance, and she continues to inspire others with her strength and focus.
These survivors are part of the After-Cancer Therapy (ACT) programme by the ImPaCCT Foundation, which supports young survivors in their transition from treatment to rebuilding their lives. The ACT programme helps survivors navigate the challenges they face in areas such as education, career development, and mental health, providing them with the necessary resources to thrive. The event at Tata Memorial Hospital also served as a valuable support network for families, offering them a space to connect, share experiences, and receive encouragement from others who have faced similar struggles. It highlighted the crucial role of community and emotional support in the recovery process.
The resilience displayed by these young survivors is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome even the most challenging circumstances. As they continue to move forward with their lives, their stories serve as an inspiration to those currently fighting childhood cancer, proving that there is always hope for a brighter future.
