Meteorological assessments indicate that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to strengthen across the state between June 11 and June 14. More than 15 districts, particularly those adjoining the Western Ghats and northern interior regions, are likely to witness heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.The anticipated rainfall is expected to influence districts including Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Theni, Dindigul, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai. Weather experts have also projected a gradual reduction in daytime temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal as cloud cover and precipitation intensify.
The development comes after several parts of the state experienced prolonged heat conditions. Chennai registered temperatures above 40°C earlier this week, underlining the increasing frequency of extreme weather events affecting urban centres. Despite continuing hot and humid conditions during daytime, the capital city is expected to receive isolated evening and night-time showers.The latest Tamil Nadu rain alert has renewed attention on the state’s climate resilience measures. Urban planners and disaster management specialists have repeatedly highlighted the importance of maintaining stormwater drainage systems, safeguarding water bodies and strengthening local warning mechanisms as rainfall patterns become more erratic.
