Chennai Plans Major Redevelopment for Chetpet Eco Parkc

Chennai’s Chetpet Eco Park is set for a major redevelopment as part of a ₹20.17 crore initiative aimed at enhancing recreational facilities and ecological preservation. The 16-acre park, a popular urban green space, will undergo significant upgrades to improve visitor experience and environmental sustainability. The redevelopment will include new water sports facilities, a musical fountain, bird-viewing decks, an expanded boating area, and improved play zones for children. Additionally, the project will introduce a modernised entrance with a tensile roof, a snack bar, and upgraded walkways to enhance accessibility and convenience for visitors.

Authorities have also planned key ecological enhancements, including the installation of porous surfaces around the lake to support sustainable water management. Landscaping efforts will be expanded, and the existing infrastructure including the administration block, multi-level parking, fisheries lab, and watchtower will be renovated to align with modern standards. The Chetpet Eco Park, inaugurated in 2017, was initially developed as part of a lake rejuvenation project to restore the water body affected by pollution. Since then, it has become a preferred destination for nature lovers, fitness enthusiasts, and families, attracting an estimated 20,000 visitors each month.

Officials believe that the redevelopment will further boost urban greenery, contributing to pollution control and reducing the urban heat island effect. The park’s revamp aligns with the broader vision of enhancing public spaces while maintaining ecological balance.
The project, managed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, is expected to be completed within six months from the date of site handover. As the city progresses with its urban renewal efforts, the Chetpet Eco Park redevelopment stands as a testament to Chennai’s commitment to sustainable urban planning and green infrastructure.
