Chennai Onam Special Trains Add Kerala Travel Capacity
Chennai’s rail network is adding temporary capacity on key routes to Kerala and coastal Karnataka as Onam travel demand builds. The additional services to Kollam and Mangaluru will give passengers more choices during one of the year’s busiest festive travel periods. They also highlight the pressure on regular inter-state rail services as large numbers of workers, students and families travel home.
Southern Railway has scheduled two Chennai Central–Kollam specials and a Chennai Egmore–Mangaluru service during August and early September. The services are aimed at absorbing additional demand rather than replacing regular trains. Train 06119 will leave Chennai Central at 3.10pm on August 12, 19 and 26, and September 2. It is scheduled to reach Kollam at 7.20am the following morning. The service is configured with 16 AC three-tier economy coaches, making it primarily a reserved air-conditioned option.A second Chennai–Kollam service, train 06117, will operate on selected Thursdays and Saturdays from August 15 through September 5. It provides a broader mix of accommodation, including first AC-cum-second AC, second AC, AC three-tier and sleeper coaches. The schedule therefore gives passengers more price and comfort choices than the economy-only service.
The Mangaluru connection will run as train 06125 from Chennai Egmore on August 18 and 25 and September 1. The service follows a route through major Tamil Nadu and Kerala centres before reaching Mangaluru Central. Its coach composition includes sleeper, AC three-tier, second AC and general coaches, widening access for both reserved and unreserved passengers. For citizens, the significance extends beyond festival convenience. Chennai’s links with Kerala support a substantial flow of workers, students and families across state borders. During peak periods, limited seats on regular services can push travellers towards more expensive or less convenient alternatives.
The temporary capacity also has an urban mobility dimension. Rail can move large passenger volumes with less road-space demand than equivalent private vehicle journeys. However, the usefulness of Onam special trains will depend on reliable schedules, accessible stations, clear passenger information and adequate last-mile connections. The services should therefore be viewed as short-term capacity management, not a substitute for stronger year-round inter-state connectivity. Sustained investment in rail capacity and coordinated public transport could make seasonal travel less dependent on emergency additions. As Onam approaches, Onam special trains may ease pressure on regular services, but their broader value will be measured by affordability, reliability and how effectively they connect passengers to their final destinations.
