Chennai Metro Phase II has crossed the halfway point in physical construction, with 54.62% of its planned 118.9-km network completed by June 2026. The milestone signals substantial progress on a major public transport investment, but the remaining work will determine whether the expanded network can deliver the reliable, low-carbon mobility Chennai needs.
The latest progress data places Chennai Metro Phase II among the more advanced large metro projects currently being implemented under the Union housing and urban affairs ministry. The network will eventually comprise 128 stations across three corridors, linking northern, central, western and southern parts of the metropolitan area. The project carries an estimated cost of ₹63,246 crore, with the Centre and Tamil Nadu implementing it as a 50:50 joint venture. However, the funding figure in recent reports needs clarification. A parliamentary reply records ₹5,554.15 crore released by the Centre for Phase II since its October 2024 sanction, rather than ₹14,545.91 crore.The three corridors have different urban roles. Corridor 3 will connect Madhavaram with SIPCOT across 45.8 km, Corridor 4 will run between Lighthouse and Poonamallee Bypass for 26.1 km, while Corridor 5 will connect Madhavaram and Sholinganallur over 47 km. About 42.6 km of the alignment will run underground, according to project data.
For residents, however, the value of Chennai Metro Phase II will depend on more than construction percentages. Stations must connect safely with footpaths, buses, suburban rail and other modes. Last-mile services, accessible interchanges and shaded pedestrian routes will be equally important if the network is to reduce dependence on private vehicles. The first operational section is also highlighting the gap between infrastructure completion and public access. The 14.64-km Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch received the required safety clearance earlier this year, but passenger operations have remained dependent on the final inauguration process.
The broader network is currently targeted for completion by the end of 2028. That makes the next two years critical for underground construction, station finishing, systems integration and road restoration. For Chennai, the real measure of Phase II will ultimately be whether new rail capacity translates into shorter journeys, cleaner air and easier access to jobs and services. Construction progress is encouraging; integrated, dependable and inclusive mobility will decide its lasting urban impact.
