Chennai Metro Yellow Line Adds 6am Services From October 23

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) will begin services on the Phase-2 Yellow Line at 6am from October 23, advancing the start time by one hour after receiving feedback from commuters. The revised schedule will apply to the 15km Corridor-4 stretch between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani in both directions.

The line currently begins operations at 7am. Under the revised timetable, trains will run from 6am to 9pm, allowing passengers travelling towards Vadapalani and Poonamallee to use the corridor earlier in the day.

CMRL’s decision changes the first operating window for the line without altering the announced end of service at 9pm. The adjustment is intended to make early-morning travel more convenient for commuters using the Phase-2 corridor.

From Monday to Saturday, trains will operate every 10 minutes during the peak periods of 8am to 11am and 5pm to 8pm. This frequency will cover the morning and evening periods identified in the revised schedule as peak hours.

During non-peak periods, trains will run every 15 minutes. The non-peak windows will be 6am to 8am, 11am to 5pm and 8pm to 9pm. The early-morning service will therefore begin with a 15-minute frequency before the first peak period starts at 8am.

The revised timetable covers travel in both directions between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani. For commuters using the line before 7am, the change brings forward the first available metro service by one hour. CMRL said the adjustment followed commuter feedback, linking the schedule change to demand for earlier connectivity on the corridor.

The frequency pattern separates the day into peak and non-peak operating periods. Trains will be more frequent during the morning and evening peaks, while the 15-minute schedule will apply during the first two hours of operation, the middle of the day and the final hour before services end.

The change comes as Chennai’s metro network continues to adjust operating schedules around passenger requirements. For users of the Yellow Line, the immediate operational change is the earlier start from October 23, while the published timetable retains services until 9pm.

CMRL’s revised schedule will take effect on October 23, with services on the Corridor-4 stretch operating from 6am to 9pm in both directions.
