Chennai Metro Tunnel Work Advances Underground Connectivity
Construction of a crucial underground section of the Chennai Metro tunnel network has entered a new phase, with excavation now underway between the upcoming Nungambakkam and Sterling Road stations as part of Metro Phase II. The development marks another milestone in the city’s largest public transport investment, aimed at expanding high-capacity mobility while reducing long-term dependence on private vehicles across central Chennai.
The latest tunnelling activity forms part of Corridor 3, the 45.8-kilometre route connecting Madhavaram with SIPCOT through major commercial, institutional and residential districts. Once operational, the underground link is expected to strengthen connectivity across one of Chennai’s busiest urban corridors, serving thousands of daily commuters travelling to educational institutions, workplaces, healthcare facilities and retail hubs.Officials associated with the project indicated that the underground drive covers a relatively short stretch of around 500 metres and is expected to be completed early next year, subject to construction conditions. Engineering assessments suggest that the prevailing soil profile is favourable for excavation, reducing the likelihood of major technical interruptions during this phase of work.
The Chennai Metro tunnel alignment passes beneath important city roads, including Uthamar Gandhi Road and Valluvar Kottam Road, before reaching the Sterling Road junction. The corridor also integrates with another planned station near Anna Flyover, expanding accessibility within a dense urban zone that has witnessed increasing traffic pressure over the past decade. While the project promises long-term transport benefits, ongoing construction continues to reshape everyday movement in surrounding neighbourhoods. Traffic diversions, narrowed carriageways and temporary restrictions have affected local mobility, highlighting the balancing act between delivering major infrastructure and maintaining urban liveability during execution. Urban mobility experts note that timely completion of such projects is essential to minimise prolonged disruption to residents and businesses. From a planning perspective, Metro Phase II represents more than an expansion of rail infrastructure.
