The strongest travel volumes were observed during the final week of the month, with one weekday crossing 377,000 passenger trips, underlining how closely urban transit demand in Chennai is linked to the functioning of schools, colleges and employment centres. Digital ticketing trends provide further insight into evolving travel behaviour. Contactless smart cards accounted for nearly half of all journeys undertaken during the month, while QR-based ticketing continued to attract occasional riders and visitors. A growing share of passengers also booked trips through digital commerce applications integrated with the country’s open mobility ecosystem. Urban mobility experts view the shift towards interoperable and cashless payment systems as an important step in building seamless public transport networks. Easier ticket access can improve first-time adoption and encourage commuters to combine metro travel with buses, suburban rail and other shared transport options.
