Chennai Metro Phase Two Advances Along OMR

Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase Two programme has achieved a key engineering milestone on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) alignment, with foundation piling and precast U-girder production now completed for a major section of Corridor 3. The development marks a significant transition from underground structural work to the next stage of construction, bringing one of the city’s most anticipated public transport projects closer to serving its rapidly expanding technology and residential districts.

The completed works cover the elevated stretch between Nehru Nagar and Sholinganallur on Corridor 3, which connects Madhavaram with SIPCOT. This section passes through Chennai’s largest information technology corridor, where increasing commercial activity and residential growth have intensified pressure on road infrastructure over the past decade. According to project information released by Chennai Metro Rail, engineers have completed installation of 3,066 foundation piles while also finishing the casting of all 582 prestressed U-girders required for the elevated viaduct and station structures. These large precast components, manufactured at a dedicated casting facility in Semmancheri, are expected to accelerate on-site construction by reducing assembly time and limiting prolonged disruption along one of Chennai’s busiest arterial roads.

Delivering Chennai Metro Phase 2 infrastructure along OMR has presented considerable engineering challenges. Construction has been carried out amid continuous traffic movement, requiring phased execution to minimise disruption for commuters and businesses. The corridor also intersects with existing flyovers at strategic junctions, demanding careful structural integration without affecting ongoing road operations.Subsurface conditions added another layer of complexity. Hard rock formations encountered near Sholinganallur required specialised drilling techniques and modified construction methods to achieve the required foundation depth. Urban infrastructure specialists note that overcoming such geological constraints is often essential to maintaining project timelines while ensuring long-term structural safety. Beyond engineering achievements, the milestone carries broader implications for Chennai’s mobility strategy. OMR remains one of the city’s most congested transport corridors, with thousands of daily commuters relying heavily on private vehicles and buses. Expanding high-capacity public transport along this route could improve journey reliability, reduce travel emissions and strengthen connectivity between employment hubs and residential neighbourhoods.

Urban planners have consistently argued that metro expansion alone cannot transform mobility unless accompanied by improved pedestrian access, integrated bus services and last-mile connectivity. As Chennai Metro Phase 2 progresses, the effectiveness of the network will depend not only on civil construction but also on how seamlessly stations connect with surrounding urban infrastructure and public transport systems. With foundation works now substantially complete on this section, attention will shift towards superstructure installation, track-related activities and station development. The pace of these upcoming phases will be closely watched by residents, businesses and transport planners, as timely completion could play an important role in supporting Chennai’s long-term goals of sustainable urban growth, reduced road congestion and lower transport-related carbon emissions.
