Chennai Women Get New Commercial Driving Training Push

The Greater Chennai Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Azad Foundation to train women in commercial two-wheeler and four-wheeler driving, linking mobility skills with safer transport networks and dignified livelihoods in Chennai.

The agreement was signed at the Ripon Building, with a special focus on women from marginalised socio-economic backgrounds. Under the partnership, participants will receive commercial driving training intended to help them move into professional roles in the transport and mobility sectors.

The initiative is being coordinated with the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Gender and Policy Lab. According to the information reported by DT Next, the programme is designed to address structural barriers that women face in accessing transport-related employment and professional driving opportunities.

The partnership also connects women’s workforce participation with the wider functioning of the city’s transport system. The corporation’s Gender and Policy Lab said that professional driving skills could support women’s financial independence while strengthening safe transit infrastructure for women using Chennai’s public and commercial transport networks.

The agreement covers training for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, potentially widening the range of commercial driving roles available to participants. The report did not specify the number of women expected to be trained, the course duration, the locations of training centres, or the timeline for the first batch.

GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran attended the signing along with Azad Foundation executives Dolon Ganguly and Malini Krishnan, and Legis, head of the corporation’s Gender and Policy Lab. The programme will proceed through the partnership between the civic body and the foundation, with training forming the first stated component of the agreement.
