Chennai Metro Corridor Five Nears Structural Milestone
Chennai’s expanding mass transit network has crossed another engineering milestone, with all precast U-girders required for the elevated section of Metro Corridor 5 now completed, a development expected to accelerate construction activity along one of the city’s most significant east-west mobility projects. The achievement is viewed as an important step in improving connectivity across densely populated residential and employment clusters while supporting a shift towards lower-carbon urban transport.
The completed batch of 824 precast segments will support the elevated portion of the 47-kilometre corridor linking Madhavaram Milk Colony with Sholinganallur. Officials associated with the project indicated that the final structural component has been prepared for installation near Adambakkam, enabling faster progress on viaduct and station works over the coming months. The Corridor 5 project has emerged as a crucial component of Chennai’s Phase 2 metro expansion, aimed at providing seamless connections between northern and southern parts of the city. Urban mobility specialists note that improved public transport infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as Chennai experiences rapid population growth and rising travel demand. The large-scale casting facility established for the project has supplied structural elements for multiple sections of the elevated alignment. A major engineering achievement was recorded earlier when an unusually long U-girder weighing more than 200 tonnes was installed on a section of the corridor near Ramapuram. Such innovations are expected to support complex alignments passing through busy urban districts where land availability and traffic management require careful planning.
The Corridor 5 route is designed to serve several important residential, commercial and employment centres including Koyambedu and Porur, strengthening links between established neighbourhoods and emerging economic zones.
