Chennai commuters relying on the Kilambakkam Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) can soon expect significant relief as the Kilambakkam railway station prepares to commence operations from the first week of July.
The move promises to transform the accessibility landscape for thousands of bus passengers facing daily challenges travelling 25 to 30 kilometres from the city centre. Officials from the Chennai Railway Division have confirmed that the station’s first platform, complete with essential shelters, is ready, while work on a second platform is nearing completion and expected within a month. A temporary ticket office is also being set up to facilitate passenger services. Train halts are slated to begin shortly thereafter, contingent upon the completion of the state government’s foot overbridge (FOB) connecting the station to KCBT. Authorities emphasise that operating train services before the FOB’s completion could jeopardise commuter safety, underscoring a commitment to secure and sustainable infrastructure.
Addressing a longstanding bottleneck, the integration of rail and bus networks at Kilambakkam marks a significant step towards reducing commuter dependency on lengthy road journeys and easing congestion on Chennai’s arterial routes. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has resolved land acquisition issues, acquiring 1.45 acres critical for infrastructure expansion near the station, paving the way for construction to proceed. The land-owning company has provided a No Objection Certificate (NOC), enabling the government to advance with erecting pillars for a 450-metre pedestrian skywalk bridging KCBT and the railway station across GST Road.
This skywalk, coupled with escalator-equipped FOB access points, will dramatically improve pedestrian connectivity by eliminating hazardous road crossings and encouraging safer, more efficient commuter flow. Minor design revisions were necessary to meet Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Southern Railway guidelines, but these have now been approved and submitted for final government sanction, reflecting the project’s adherence to stringent safety and operational standards. imultaneously, railway officials have completed the strategic repositioning of the third track at Kilambakkam to facilitate the creation of an island platform. This new platform will enable passengers to board and alight trains from both sides, enhancing operational efficiency and passenger convenience. A new 400-metre track adjacent to the original line has been laid and integrated with overhead electrical lines in both directions, while the old track was dismantled to accommodate this development.
This rail infrastructure upgrade aligns with the broader goal of sustainable and equitable urban transport, reducing vehicular congestion and promoting environmentally responsible commuting alternatives.
