Chennai GCC Deploys Rs 65 Crore Fleet to Strengthen Monsoon Readiness

The Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed vehicles, bins and other equipment worth Rs 65 crore to strengthen solid waste management and maintain civic services as Chennai prepares for the northeast monsoon. The new assets were inaugurated at Lloyds Colony in the Teynampet zone on Saturday by GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran.

The rollout includes 356 vehicles, 2,873 dustbins and additional equipment intended to improve waste collection, road cleanliness and garbage removal during the rainfall season. The civic body said the deployment would help it respond more quickly to sanitation requirements, including in areas affected by waterlogging.

The fleet comprises 283 battery-operated vehicles, 37 refuse compactors, 28 vehicles with a two-tonne capacity, seven hook loaders and one mechanical sweeper. The equipment also includes 18 containers, each with a capacity of 20 cubic metres. The report separately lists 2,854 bins in the detailed equipment breakdown, while the overall rollout was described as including 2,873 dustbins and other equipment.

The battery-operated vehicles are expected to support localised waste collection and movement across neighbourhoods, while refuse compactors and larger-capacity vehicles will assist with the handling and transportation of collected waste. Hook loaders and containers will provide additional capacity for bulk waste and other operational requirements.

According to officials, the expanded fleet is intended to help the civic body handle bulk waste generation and ensure faster cleanliness responses during heavy rainfall. Timely garbage removal is particularly important during monsoon operations because accumulated waste can obstruct road drainage points and complicate the movement of sanitation teams in waterlogged locations. The source report did not provide a ward-wise deployment plan or details of the number of personnel assigned to operate the new vehicles.

The equipment is being introduced as part of the corporation’s preparations for the northeast monsoon, when sustained rainfall can place simultaneous demands on solid waste collection, road maintenance and emergency civic operations. The GCC said the assets would support uninterrupted solid waste management services throughout the season rather than serving only routine collection requirements.

At the inauguration, Sameeran also distributed uniforms and raincoats to sanitation workers. The move links the equipment rollout with worker preparedness, as sanitation personnel will continue to operate during periods of heavy rain and in areas where roads may be affected by waterlogging.

Deputy Commissioner (Health) Thackeray Shubham Dnyandeorao and other senior officials attended the event. The corporation’s stated next step is to use the additional vehicles and equipment to maintain road cleanliness, remove garbage on time and respond to monsoon-related sanitation requirements across Chennai.
