Chennai is preparing for a major traffic reorganisation in its northern corridor as construction activity linked to a new railway overbridge near RK Nagar enters a crucial phase, prompting authorities to introduce revised vehicle movement plans aimed at maintaining connectivity while supporting long-term infrastructure upgrades.
From June 6, motorists travelling across New Washermenpet, RK Nagar and adjoining industrial areas will encounter diversions as work progresses on the new flyover spanning the railway level crossing between Vaidyanathan Bridge and RK Nagar Junction. The changes are expected to affect freight movement, daily commuting patterns and access to key employment zones around the Indian Oil Corporation facilities and Korukkupet.According to traffic management arrangements issued by city authorities, vehicles approaching Korukkupet from the refinery side will be redirected through Vaidyanathan Flyover and Tiruvottiyur High Road. Light motor vehicles travelling towards the industrial belt from the RK Nagar side will have to use alternative corridors passing through Korukkupet and adjoining neighbourhood roads.
The Chennai traffic diversion plan also modifies movement for vehicles arriving from Meenambal Flyover and Moolakothalam. Heavy vehicles and buses heading towards the IOCL zone will be routed through Mint Junction and Kannan Roundabout before reconnecting with Tiruvottiyur High Road, while smaller vehicles will be directed through residential stretches including Chunnambu Kalvai Road and Annai Sathya Nagar.Urban planners note that such temporary disruptions are increasingly becoming part of the challenge of upgrading infrastructure in dense and historically developed city districts.
