Chennai Aviation Growth Gains Reliability Through Better Operations
Chennai International Airport emerged as India’s top-performing major airport for flight punctuality in May 2026, recording the highest on-time performance among the country’s busiest aviation hubs. The achievement comes as domestic air travel continues expanding, highlighting the growing importance of efficient transport infrastructure in supporting urban mobility, business connectivity and regional economic activity.
Data released by the aviation regulator showed that domestic airlines handled 729.40 lakh passengers between January and May 2026, marking a 1.91% increase compared with the same period last year. The rise indicates continued demand for air connectivity as cities experience stronger movement of people for employment, tourism and commercial activity. Chennai Airport recorded an on-time performance rate of 92.2% in May, placing it ahead of other major airports including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. The measurement reflects how consistently flights operate according to scheduled timings and has become an important indicator of passenger experience. The strong performance places Chennai’s aviation infrastructure under greater focus as the city continues to expand as a manufacturing, technology and services hub. Urban planners note that reliable mobility networks are essential for reducing travel uncertainty and improving access to economic opportunities, particularly for workers and businesses dependent on regional and national connections.
The aviation sector’s growth also brings renewed attention to sustainability challenges. Increasing passenger movement requires airports and airlines to balance operational efficiency with climate responsibilities, including energy management, cleaner technologies and better integration with public transport networks. Efficient airport operations can contribute to reducing unnecessary delays, fuel wastage and congestion around urban gateways.Among domestic carriers, IndiGo recorded the highest on-time performance in May at 82.8%, followed by Akasa Air at 78.3% and the Air India Group at 74.5%. Meanwhile, Akasa Air reported the lowest cancellation rate among scheduled domestic airlines during the month. Industry experts suggest that punctuality is becoming a key factor influencing passenger choices as air travel becomes a routine part of urban life. Beyond convenience, dependable schedules support productivity by helping businesses manage time-sensitive operations and improving access between cities.
Technical issues remained the largest contributor to flight cancellations during the month, accounting for 45.1% of disruptions. Operational challenges and weather-related interruptions were other major factors affecting services.
