Chennai airport parking charges have increased for cars, two-wheelers, passenger pickup and drop-off vehicles, and airport employees, with the revised tariffs taking effect from 12.01 am on Sunday, according to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The revised rates range from Rs 5 to Rs 110 depending on the vehicle category and duration of parking. Longer stays and larger passenger vehicles will attract the steepest charges under the new tariff.
For cars, parking for up to 30 minutes now costs Rs 90, compared with Rs 85 earlier. The charge for up to one hour has increased from Rs 110 to Rs 115. Parking for one to two hours will cost Rs 175, up from Rs 165, while the rate for a stay of between 10 and 24 hours has risen from Rs 550 to Rs 580.
Two-wheeler charges for the first one and two hours remain unchanged at Rs 20 and Rs 35 respectively. However, rates for longer durations have increased by Rs 5 to Rs 10, depending on the length of stay. Parking a two-wheeler for between 10 and 24 hours will now cost Rs 105, compared with Rs 100 earlier.
The tariff has also been revised for passenger vehicles with fewer than 16 seats. The first 30 minutes will cost Rs 345, an increase of Rs 15. Parking for up to 10 hours has risen from Rs 990 to Rs 1,040, while the 24-hour charge has increased from Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,155.
Vehicles with more than 16 seats will be charged Rs 695 for the first 30 minutes, compared with Rs 660 previously. The fee for up to 10 hours has increased from Rs 1,985 to Rs 2,085, and the 24-hour charge has risen from Rs 2,205 to Rs 2,315.
Airport employees will also pay higher monthly parking fees. The revised monthly charge is Rs 580 for cars and Rs 230 for two-wheelers. Passengers who lose their parking tickets will have to pay a penalty in addition to the applicable parking fee. The penalty is Rs 580 for cars and Rs 175 for two-wheelers.
The existing 10-minute free period will continue for white-board vehicles picking up or dropping off passengers and yellow-board vehicles dropping off passengers. The exemption applies from entry to exit. Vehicles that remain inside the airport beyond the permitted period will be charged according to the prevailing parking tariff.
Parking tariff revisions at airports are generally issued with advance notice. The latest increase at Chennai airport, however, was announced shortly before implementation, according to the report, prompting concerns among passengers and vehicle operators, particularly those using the airport for longer durations. The revised rates are now applicable under the AAI tariff framework.
