The Central Bureau of Investigation has asked Malwani police to hand over documents related to the death of celebrity manager Disha Salian, following a Bombay High Court order directing registration of an FIR and appointing a senior CBI officer to investigate the case.
A senior Mumbai police official said the department had received the court order and prepared the case-related documents for collection by the CBI. “We have received a copy of the HC order. Accordingly, we have kept all case-related documents ready. A CBI officer is likely to collect them from us later this week. CBI has also sent us a letter in this regard,” the official said, according to the Times of India.
Salian, 28, died on June 8, 2020, at a housing society in Malad. The earlier Mumbai Police inquiry had concluded that her death was a suicide and that there was no foul play, the report said.
Salian’s father later approached the Bombay High Court, alleging suspicious circumstances and seeking an investigation into the death as a murder case. His petition was filed through counsel Nilesh Ojha.
While pronouncing its judgment, the High Court directed that an FIR be registered and that the investigation be conducted by a senior CBI officer. The court also cautioned against treating any person as an accused without supporting material. “No one shall be treated as an accused unless and until there is suitable material against them,” the court directed.
The transfer of documents from Malwani police to the CBI marks the next procedural step after the court order. The material is expected to include records connected with the earlier police inquiry, although the report does not specify the complete list of documents requested by the investigating agency.
The case has also drawn public attention because Salian had worked with actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020. The two deaths occurred within days of each other, but the current CBI action concerns the investigation into Salian’s death and the court’s direction in her father’s petition.
The High Court’s order limits any premature identification of suspects while the investigation proceeds. The CBI officer is expected to collect the documents from Malwani police later this week, after which the agency’s investigation will move forward under the terms of the court’s direction.
