Burari Road in north Delhi is set for a Rs 125-crore upgrade covering the entire 7.1-km corridor and a new 9.3-km drainage network, in a plan aimed at improving connectivity and addressing recurring waterlogging in the area.
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh inspected Burari Road and adjoining drainage works on Sunday and reviewed the proposed plan with senior department officials. The project will cover the route from Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura to Hiranki.
Under the road component, the 3.2-km stretch between Outer Ring Road and Baba Colony and the Nathupura-Hiranki section will be reconstructed with bituminous roads. The 3.9-km stretch between Baba Colony and Nathupura will be developed as an RCC road at an estimated cost of Rs 39 crore. A central verge is also planned along the full 7.1-km corridor.
The drainage component is estimated to cost Rs 75 crore and will create or improve a 9.3-km network. Proposed works include drains on both sides of the road between Amrit Vihar and Bengali Colony, as well as drainage improvements on the Swaroop Nagar More-Burari Creek stretch.
The drainage work has already been tendered, while the road works are expected to be tendered within the next 10 days, according to the department. The tendering schedule will determine when construction can begin, although no completion date was provided in the announcement.
The plan brings the road and drainage works under one coordinated programme, an approach intended to avoid newly improved roads being dug up later for drainage-related construction. The PWD said the integrated execution model would address road quality and waterlogging together rather than treating them as separate works.
Singh directed officials to coordinate both components and maintain quality standards during execution. “The entire corridor will be upgraded in an integrated manner. From the Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura up to Hiranki, the road will be improved according to the requirements of each stretch, while drainage infrastructure will be strengthened simultaneously,” he said.
He also instructed officials to plan the works so that residents do not face repeated disruption. “Every stretch must be executed with proper planning and quality. The road and drainage works should be coordinated so that residents do not face repeated disruption and the infrastructure delivers a durable solution for Burari,” Singh said.
Until reconstruction begins, the PWD will undertake regular water sprinkling along the affected stretches as a dust-control measure. The department’s next immediate milestones are the road tender, continued drainage procurement and coordination of the two work packages before execution begins.
