Bridgestone India’s Pune Plant Achieves Carbon Neutrality

Bridgestone India’s manufacturing unit in Chakan, near Pune, has achieved carbon
neutrality for 2022. This accomplishment was officially verified through an audit
conducted by LRQA (Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance) in May and June of
2023. The verification process adhered to the international PAS 2060 standard, a
milestone in Bridgestone’s global commitment to decarbonise its manufacturing
operations.

The company is aiming to attain carbon neutrality (Scope 1 and 2) by 2050 and
reduce Co2 emissions from its operations by 50 percent by 2030, compared to the
benchmark year of 2011.

The Pune facility, which produces over 4 million tires annually, has made
remarkable strides in reducing its carbon footprint, achieving 94 percent reduction
through a series of strategic initiatives. These initiatives encompass the
establishment of a 5 mw solar power capacity and the implementation of a carbon-
neutral biomass-based boiler plant that utilises agricultural waste biomass
briquettes. To offset 2,974 tons of Co2 emissions, Bridgestone India took the step of
purchasing Verified Carbon Standard credits. These credits were acquired from a solar photovoltaic project operated by Acme, which generates renewable energy
for regional power grids across India.

Beyond the solar power and carbon-neutral boiler initiatives, Bridgestone has also
enacted sustainability measures at the shop-floor level. These include the
replacement of diesel-based forklifts with electric-powered counterparts and the
transition to electric power in lieu of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).
Koji Takagi, Chief Sustainability Officer of Bridgestone EMIA (Europe, Middle
East, India, and Africa), celebrated the certification of carbon neutrality at one of
the company’s two tire plants in India as a historic landmark. This achievement
underscores Bridgestone's commitment to sustainability.
