Bowenpally Flyover Works Advance After GHMC Demolition Drive

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation carried out a demolition drive in Sikh Village and Bowenpally on Friday to clear the way for widening a road to 100 feet, advancing construction of the Bowenpally flyover corridor from Paradise Junction to Dairy Farm Road on National Highway 44.

The municipal action is linked to the ongoing elevated flyover project being developed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority. The 5.4-kilometre corridor has an estimated cost of Rs 1,487 crore and is intended to improve the route between Paradise Junction and Dairy Farm Road in Bowenpally.

The project includes a 3.095-kilometre elevated section and a 1.705-kilometre at-grade section. It will also feature a 600-metre tunnel passing underneath Begumpet airport, according to the report. The corridor was expected to be completed within 36 months.

The road-widening requirement has made the removal of structures a necessary part of the current construction activity. The demolition drive took place in Sikh Village and Bowenpally as civic officials prepared the area for the 100-foot-wide road section associated with the flyover works.

The demolition was not limited to municipal workers. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board also demolished two marriage halls in the area following court orders. The report refers to the location as Silk Village in its account of the cantonment board’s action, while identifying the broader demolition drive as taking place in Sikh Village and Bowenpally.

The corridor’s design combines elevated and at-grade construction rather than relying on a single flyover structure throughout its length. The planned tunnel below Begumpet airport is another defining feature of the project and adds a technically complex underground component to the route.

For road users, the immediate significance of the demolition is that construction access and right-of-way preparation can proceed along the affected stretch. The project’s eventual operation will depend on the completion of the elevated section, the at-grade road component and the tunnel, as well as the associated road-widening work.

The reported 36-month completion expectation provides the project’s stated implementation timeframe. Further progress will depend on the continuation of construction by HMDA, completion of the cleared road sections and execution of the remaining components between Paradise Junction and Dairy Farm Road.
