Bhutan inks hydropower MoU with Adani Group

Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and the Adani Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop hydropower projects with a cumulative capacity of 5,000 megawatts.

The agreement was formalised in Thimphu by DGPC managing director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Adani Green Hydro Ltd’s chief operating officer (PSP & Hydro), Naresh Telgu, in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Energy Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering. The partnership builds on the existing collaboration between DGPC and Adani for the 570/900 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project, in which DGPC holds a 51% stake and Adani 49%. The broader initiative aims to identify new hydropower and pumped storage project sites, prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), and implement them in phases.

“This partnership reflects our deep commitment to developing clean energy infrastructure that enhances regional energy security,” said Telgu. “Together with DGPC, we are enabling Bhutan to harness its hydropower potential and export reliable green energy to India. This is a powerful example of cross-border collaboration in pursuit of shared sustainable development goals.” The development comes at a time when both countries are expanding their energy ties to meet rising power demands through sustainable sources.

Bhutan, with its abundant water resources, has long been a key partner in India’s renewable energy strategy, and the new pact significantly scales up ambitions on both sides.
