Bhubaneswar Ravan Dahan Gets Nine Venues as Safety Plans Tighten

Bhubaneswar has approved Ravan Dahan ceremonies at nine locations for Vijayadashami, while Kataka is preparing to host its 36th Ravan Podi Festival with an 80-foot effigy, large public seating and heightened crowd and fire safety arrangements.

The celebrations are being held on Wednesday as Odisha marks Vijayadashami, the culmination of the five-day Durga Puja festivities. The traditional burning of Ravana effigies will accompany cultural programmes and religious observances in the twin cities as devotees bid farewell to Goddess Durga.

In Bhubaneswar, police, fire services and local puja committees have put crowd management and fire safety measures in place ahead of the events. Authorities expect large gatherings at the nine approved locations and are also preparing for traffic regulation to manage movement around the celebration venues.

The arrangements place multiple agencies and community organisers at the centre of public safety operations. Police are responsible for crowd and traffic management, while fire services and local puja committees are involved in ensuring that the effigy-burning ceremonies are conducted safely. The source report did not provide details of the individual venues, route diversions or the timing of each ceremony.

Kataka’s main celebration will take place at the Tala Bali Yatra Ground, where the Barabati Sarvadharma Sanskrutika Parishad is organising the 36th Ravan Podi Festival. An 80-foot Ravana effigy is scheduled to be set ablaze at midnight, making the event one of the major public gatherings in the city’s Vijayadashami programme.

Organisers have made seating arrangements for approximately 10,000 spectators. The festival will also feature cultural programmes by artists from across Odisha, followed by a fireworks display. State BJP President Manmohan Samal is scheduled to attend the event as chief guest.

The Kataka programme also includes traditional Dashami rituals. Dahi Pakhala will be offered to Goddess Durga as part of the observances following the slaying of Mahishasura. The combination of religious ceremonies, cultural performances and the midnight effigy burning is expected to draw spectators to the Tala Bali Yatra Ground through the evening.

For both cities, the public administration challenge extends beyond the ceremonies themselves. Large gatherings require coordinated control of pedestrian movement, vehicular traffic, seating areas and fire-related risks. The arrangements announced for Vijayadashami indicate that authorities are treating the celebrations as major public events requiring coordination between government services and local organisers.

Authorities across Bhubaneswar and Kataka remain on alert for traffic regulation, crowd management and fire safety as the celebrations proceed. The Ravan Dahan and Ravan Podi events are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, with the Kataka effigy-burning ceremony planned for midnight.
