Bhubaneswar, Odisha – In a significant move to bolster rail connectivity and alleviate congestion at the city’s main railway station, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has announced that three major express trains will soon originate from the newly developed Bhubaneswar New Railway Station (BBSN).
The trains set to commence operations from BBSN are:
- Konark Express (11019/11020): Connecting Bhubaneswar to Mumbai.
- Visakha Express (17015/17016): Linking Bhubaneswar with Secunderabad.
- Intercity Express (22819/22820): Serving the route between Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam.
These services are expected to commence shortly, with exact dates to be announced by ECoR.
Strategic Relocation to Bhubaneswar New Station
The decision to reroute these trains to BBSN is part of a strategic effort to decongest the main Bhubaneswar station, which has been operating at full capacity. Located in the northern part of the city, BBSN is poised to serve as a vital hub for passengers from northern Bhubaneswar, Athgarh, and Cuttack. The station’s proximity to educational institutions and healthcare facilities further enhances its strategic importance.
Additionally, all three trains will make a brief stop at Mancheswar Railway Station, facilitating easier access for commuters in the northern neighborhoods.
Infrastructure Upgrades Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
To accommodate the increased traffic and improve passenger experience, BBSN is undergoing significant redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Planned Expansion and enhancement of circulating areas.
- Construction of an additional Foot Over Bridge (FOB).
- Modernisation of waiting rooms and toilet facilities.
- Improvement of platform illumination.
- Installation of coach watering facilities.
- Provision of lifts on all platforms.
- Upgradation of the existing station building.
These developments aim to transform BBSN into a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly station, aligning with the broader goals of sustainable urban development and equitable access to transportation.
Anticipated Benefits for Passengers
The relocation of these express trains to BBSN is expected to yield several benefits:
- Reduced Congestion at Main Station: By diverting a portion of traffic to BBSN, the main Bhubaneswar station will experience decreased footfall, leading to a more comfortable travel experience for all passengers.
- Enhanced Accessibility for Northern Residents: Residents in the northern parts of Bhubaneswar will have improved access to long-distance trains, reducing travel time and costs associated with reaching the main station.
- Support for Students and Medical Travelers: The station’s proximity to educational institutions and hospitals will provide easier access for students and individuals requiring medical services.Looking Ahead
As BBSN prepares to commence operations for these express trains, ECoR continues to focus on enhancing rail infrastructure and services to meet the growing demands of passengers. The ongoing redevelopment efforts underscore a commitment to providing sustainable, efficient, and equitable transportation solutions in line with national objectives. Passengers are advised to stay informed about the latest updates regarding train schedules and station facilities to ensure a seamless travel experience.
