BESCOM To Relocate Footpath Transformers Across Bengaluru

BESCOM has announced plans to relocate electricity transformers obstructing footpaths across Bengaluru as part of the city’s ongoing Clean Up Bengaluru campaign. The initiative aims to improve pedestrian accessibility, strengthen road safety and create more inclusive public spaces by removing infrastructure that restricts safe movement along walkways.

The Bengaluru Footpath Improvement initiative is expected to identify transformers that occupy pedestrian space and relocate them to suitable locations without affecting power distribution. The move complements broader civic efforts to reclaim footpaths from encroachments and improve the quality of urban mobility infrastructure. Urban planners note that unobstructed footpaths are essential for creating walkable cities. Pedestrians, including senior citizens, children and persons with disabilities, often face challenges navigating around transformers, utility poles and other fixed installations, forcing them onto busy roads and increasing safety risks. Transport experts believe improving pedestrian infrastructure is fundamental to sustainable mobility. Safe and continuous walkways encourage walking as a viable mode of transport, improve access to bus stops and metro stations, and support healthier, low-carbon urban lifestyles while reducing dependence on private vehicles.

From an urban design perspective, utility infrastructure should be integrated into streetscape planning to ensure it does not interfere with public movement. Experts recommend coordinated planning between power utilities, civic agencies and transport authorities to optimise the placement of transformers, utility cabinets and other public infrastructure. The initiative also supports Bengaluru’s wider efforts to create people-centric public spaces. Well-designed footpaths improve accessibility for all users while enhancing neighbourhood liveability, commercial activity and the overall urban environment. Walkable streets are increasingly recognised as an important indicator of sustainable and inclusive city development. Environmental specialists highlight that encouraging walking can contribute to reduced vehicular emissions, improved air quality and healthier communities. Investments in pedestrian infrastructure complement public transport expansion and climate-resilient urban planning by promoting cleaner and more efficient modes of mobility.

As Bengaluru continues upgrading its civic infrastructure, the Bengaluru Footpath Improvement initiative reflects a growing emphasis on accessibility, safety and sustainable urban development. Experts believe continued collaboration between utility providers and civic agencies will be essential to creating pedestrian-friendly streets that support a more inclusive, resilient and liveable city.
